This attack has targeted corporations, universities and, healthcare facilities, including children’s hospitals. All too often this attack occurs because of phishing but also through the compromise of privileged accounts. Two of the most notorious and costly ransomware attacks, against the gaming industry, were accomplished via social engineering scams against help desks. Call center personnel were only too happy to reset passwords on accounts with enhanced access over the phone, to bad guys they thought were good.
